A taco chain that’s been making a splash across Ontario is finally about to open a location in downtown Toronto.
When we talk about, think about, and, most importantly, eat tacos, authenticity is typically a lauded quality. The more it tastes like you just picked it up from a stall on the streets of Mexico City, the better.
Generally, we’re inclined to agree with that take, but in the case of Newmarket’s Ghost Taco, inauthenticity is the name of the game.
It’s not a blunder on the restaurant’s behalf, but their modus operandi, as the chain proudly advertises the “unauthentic Mexican” cuisine on their menu.
Their menu includes 12 taco varieties, which you can mix and match for servings of two, three or four, and which come in flavours ranging from tried-and-true to utterly out of this world.
Take theĀ Vampire, for example, which comes with fried cheese, pickled jalapeƱo, braised pork and sriracha aioli, or theĀ Alabama Chicken, where fried chicken is smothered in ‘Bama-style white barbecue sauce and topped with corn salsa and lettuce.
On the other hand, they still do serve their fair share of the classics, fromĀ Chicken TingaĀ toĀ Carnitas.
With a cosign from celebrity chef and culinary consultant Mark Basile, not to mention the nearly 12,000 Instagram followers it’s amassed in under two years, it’s clear that playing fast and loose with the idea of what a taco can be has been working.
On top of that, after launching their first location in Newmarket in December of 2023, Ghost Taco has gone on to open an additional four locations across Ontario, and this week, it’ll be Toronto’s turn, too.
The chain’s first-ever location in the city, Ghost Taco is taking on Liberty Village with a location in Liberty Market, joining longstanding favourites like Chiang Mai and fellow newcomers, including Sundays Pasta Lab ā lucky, lucky Liberty.
Better yet, the new location is a collaboration between Ghost Taco and Something in the Water Brewing Co., and we can’t think of a more suitable match.
