44-year-old father charged with abduction in connection to Sunday's Amber Alert

A 44-year-old father is facing abduction charges following an investigation that lead to Sunday’s Amber Alert in Ontario.

According to Niagara Regional Police, on June 28, at approximately 1:10 pm, as a direct result of the Amber Alert issued at 12:30 pm, the suspect male and child attended the 1 District (St. Catharines) office of the Niagara Regional Police Service.

Police say the suspect surrendered himself to officers there and was arrested without incident. The child was safe and uninjured.

Niagara police were first contacted about a possible parental abduction around 9 am on Sunday.

Further investigation by officers with the 1 District Detective Office led to concerns regarding the welfare of the 6-year-old child, leading to the Amber Alert.

John Mitchell, of Hamilton, is facing charges that include Abuduction in contravention of custody or parenting order and Disobeying order of the court.

The investigation remains ongoing by detectives of the 1 District Detective Office.
