Student life is tough and going back to school usually means less money. Dining out may be the first thing to kill in a budget. But for those going to York U this fall, there’s still plenty of cheap food options to choose from.
Falafel Hut
If you’re attending York this fall, there’s a high chance you’ll come across Falafel Hut at least once. They’re a quick-serve Middle Eastern spot with an extensive list of wraps for $4.15 and larger plates for around $10. Falafel Hut is open daily until 2 am to accommodate night owl study schedules.

Bamiyan Kabob
Bamiyan serves affordable Afghan dishes and wraps super close to campus. With a variety of chicken, lamb, beef, and vegetable meals to choose from, students will never run out of options. Their wraps range from $5 to $7 and large rice dishes range from $10 to $15.

Berries and Bloom
Berries and Bloom has a spot at York lanes and serves healthy, cheap options such as salads and deli sandwiches. There’s a self-serve fruit and vegetable salad bar and a massive selection of meats and cheeses. Standard deli sandwiches cost $5.50 while salads start as low as $2.50. Other thrifty selections here include their crepes ($6), hot skewers ($7.50), and yogurt parfaits ($4).

The Orange Snail
Orange Snail is a pub and coffee shop right on campus. It serves hot sandwiches, pasta, wraps, Caribbean food, and much more. The menu is mostly comprised of items under $10. Whether it’s Pasta Alfredo or a Jerk Chicken, the Orange Snail has it ready for an extremely affordable price.

Sunnyside Grill
Who doesn’t love all day breakfast? Sunnyside Grill is right by campus and has an array of breakfast and sandwich options. Much of the menu is under $10, with some of the fancier breakfast options and omelets at just over $10. Basic breakfasts options go as low as $6 to $7.

Aji Sushi
While Aji Sushi’s all-you-can-eat menu can’t be considered a cheap eat, its lunch specials, which run Monday to Friday from 11:30 am to 3:30 pm, are one of the best deals around campus. For only $8.50 choose from Kung Pao Chicken, Lemon Chicken, Singapore Noodles, and much more. Every combo comes with rice, one spring roll, and a choice of miso, hot and sour, or chicken wonton soup. For a few extra dollars, there’s also the Japanese bento lunch special and a sushi roll special.

Banh Mi Boys
A favourite cheap eat across Toronto universities, Banh Mi Boys is available near York U too. Taste some fantastic fusion dishes such as the Kalbi Beef Taco, Meatball Banh Mi, or Kimchi Fries. There are also other traditional Asian favourites such as the Pork Belly Steamed Baos or Grilled Pork Banh Mi. A lunch here will likely remain in the single digits.

The Island Caribbean Restaurant
Cheap and delicious Caribbean cuisine right on campus. What could be better? The lunch specials, available Monday to Friday 11 am to 3 pm, only cost $6.64. The special includes choices like Jerk Chicken, BBQ Chicken, Fried Chicken, and a vegetarian special. Beyond the lunch specials, The Island’s roti selection is mostly under $10 and their new sandwiches cost only $7.52.
