Canada is apparently the only team in the World Cup without a nickname
As the defending Olympic champions, Canada’s women’s team is currently ranked seventh in the FIFA World Rankings.
Unfortunately, they seem to rank last in the nickname department.
A recent Twitter post from Fox Soccer compiled a list of nicknames for each of the World Cup’s participating nations. Among the list, which included the famous Italian “Azzurre” and France’s “Les Bleues”, was Canada, which was deemed to have “no official nickname.”

While the Twitter post sparked a sea of outrage and memes in the replies, many were quick to note that Team Canada is also known as “Les Rouges” (the reds in French), which is, by definition, a nickname.

Canada has literally always been Les Rouges

Uhh, Canada has a nickname: Les Rouges/The Reds

Others answered the question by jokingly selecting “no official nickname” as their favourite among the list of 32 teams.
No official nickname goes HARD

I think no official nickname is the best 😂

Canada: No Official Nickname. That’s the best nickname. They should make that their official name!

Gotta go with Canada here

One user even made a T-shirt design using the term, which, to be fair, has the potential to take off if fans and players embrace the absurd title.

While it’s won three medals at the Olympics since 2012 (two bronzes and a gold), Canada has never placed higher at the Women’s World Cup than its fourth-place finish at the 2003 FIFA event.
And if they’re in the market for a new nickname, “2023 Champions” has a pretty nice ring to it.
The Women’s World Cup officially kicked off on July 20 in New Zealand and Australia. Canada will play Nigeria in its opening matchup.
