Toronto Blue Jays make subtle changes to their home run jacket

The Toronto Blue Jays are keeping one of their more fun traditions going for this season.

After AndrĂ©s GimĂ©nez hit the Blue Jays’ first home run of the 2025 season today, the team’s home run jacket awaited him at home plate. He put on the jacket, which has changed from last season, and celebrated with his teammates.

The jacket displays the team’s multiculturalism as players’, coaches’, and staff’s home countries are represented on the back. This year, the jacket needed an update, as they have eight new players on their Opening Day roster.

The Blue Jays updated the back to make sure the current members of the organization were represented. Some countries on the newest version include Canada, Puerto Rico, Colombia, England, the USA, and many more.

The Blue Jays started the jacket tradition in 2021 after interpreter Hector Lebron proposed the idea. However, it was only a few years later when they did away with the jacket ahead of the 2023 season in an attempt to be more serious.

“It’s time to go from a talented, fun team to a talented, fun team that’s going to scrap and claw and find ways to win games,” said manager John Schneider back in March 2023.

Last year, the Blue Jays brought the home run jacket back. Star slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was one of the vocal supporters of the jacket’s return for the 2024 season, and his design influence has been noticeable as his signature “Plakata” is displayed prominently. Toronto’s iconic CN Tower is also outlined on the bottom of the jacket at the back.

The Blue Jays have also added a flickering light show, which goes off after home runs. It adds to the atmosphere as the main lights are dimmed and LED lights in the lower level shine.

The Blue Jays continue their season-opening series against the Baltimore Orioles over the next few days, with the final contest coming on Sunday. They’ll be hoping the home run jacket makes many more appearances over the weekend.
