People in Toronto can safely say the city has some of the best bars on earth, as one of them just ranked among the world’s best.
The first (or, last, if you want to get technical) fleet of bars to make it on the 2025 World’s 50 Best Bars list has officially dropped, and one very deserving Toronto bar made it on the list.
The annual list ranks the top 100 bars in cities across the world based on scores from a panel of hundreds of bartenders, experts and writers. As of Wednesday, Sept. 24, the bars that ranked 51 through 100 have been released.
Back on the list for its second year running, Little Italy’s Bar Pompette has scored itself an impressive 55th place finish, up from its spot in 70th place in 2024.
Not only that, but it was the only bar in Canada to make it on the list, full stop. We’ll drink to that!
An offshoot of the neighbourhood’s equally celebrated French bistro Vinoteca Pompette, the bar, which opened in 2021, sets itself apart with its intricate, French-inspired sips that use inventive, in-house infusions, distillates, syrups, and oils for cocktails you can’t find anywhere else.
It’s classic, cozy interiors, reminiscent of a Parisian cafe, and frequent live jazz nights certainly help, too.
Want our recommendations? We’re partial to the Fire Escape, a carbonated beverage that features spruce tips, black tea, elderflower, orange blossom, grappa and whiskey.
We also love the Cornichon, their rendition of a pickle martini with gin, dill pickle distillate, house-made dill oil and extra dry vermouth, but if you’re not a fan of pickles, this one may not be for you.
The bar has had its fair share of accolades in its time, from placing among the 50 best bars in North America last spring to coming in first place on Canada’s 50 best just days later, so, while this most recent win is a drop in the bucket for the Bar Pompette team, it’s equally well-deserved.
The list of bars that ranked 1 through 100 is set to drop this October, so we’ll have to stay tuned to see whether any other hometown heroes manage to score a spot.
