University of Washington to hold virtual graduation ceremony for students

Apr 9 2020, 7:01 pm

For the first time in the University of Washington’s 159-year history, the graduating class of 2020 will be celebrating their commencement online.

Much like a typical commencement ceremony, the June 13 event begins at 1:30 pm with an opening procession where graduates will enter the virtual “theater” hosted by the institution.

The procession will then continue with the entry of the deans, President Ana Mari Cauce, the Board of Regents, and Provost Mark Richards who will help unfold the ceremony. The graduation will end with the turning of tassels, and if students choose, a throw of the caps into the air.

UW is aiming to have a surprisingly intimate celebration and urges those wanting to take part to fill out the online commencement registration form.

Students are also invited to walk a physical commencement a year later at Husky Stadium, on June 12, 2021.
