Here's how to celebrate Seattle's first-ever Black Restaurant Week

Feb 22 2021, 7:48 pm

Black Restaurant Week (BRW) was founded in Houston five years ago and has officially made its way to the Pacific Northwest for the first time.

The week-long food fest, happening from February 19 to 28, is a national campaign celebrating African-American, African, and Caribbean food.

The week allows all foodies to enjoy prix fixe menus from participating restaurants while supporting Black-owned businesses.

According to the BRW website, participating restaurants in the Seattle area include Delish Ethiopian Cuisine, BlackStar Kebab, Lil Red Jamaican BBQ and Soul Cuisine, Nanas Southern Kitchen, Grandmas N Da Kitchen, and more.

According to a press release, this year is all about “reviving and saving the Black restaurant industry during the COVID-19 pandemic. The platform also serves as an educational tool to help show consumers the abundance of cultural cuisines in their local community and dispels ethnic untruths.”

Diners will be able to round up their change on all Grubhub orders, which will be donated to BRW’s non-profit, Feed the Soul Foundation. The money will go towards multiple $10K grants to assist restaurant owners with business development, such as menu consultation, operations, or marketing initiatives. The grants also support restaurant emergency funds in the event of flooding or break-ins and provide resources to help restaurants re-open and get back on their feet.

Scholarships to marginalized hospitality management college students that create a pathway to help grow the next generation of restaurant entrepreneurs will also be funded.

Those interested in dining at more than one Black-owned spot should partake in BRW Bingo which includes prizes of culinary treats and other fun items.
