Beloved PNW ice creamery launches special vegan menu

Salt and Straw understands that not everyone is able to enjoy their creamy goodness due to the fact that their ice cream contains dairy.

In order to allow more tongues to lick up their goodness in 2021, the PNW-based ice creamery has decided to create five delicious flavors using rich, plant-based ingredients like oat milk, coconut cream, hazelnut butter, and avocado.

“We’re using everything we know about the science of ice cream including the freezing of proteins to make the most indulgent vegan ice cream possible,” said Salt and Straw head ice cream maker, Tyler Malek, in a press release. “Our dream is to change the dialogue in this world because this ice cream isn’t just ‘good for vegan’, this ice cream is life-changing delicious because it is vegan.”

The company has also committed to making its menu contain at least 20% vegan options year-round.

Here are their five new flavors:

Peanut Butter Strawberry Crumble

Slightly tart, intensely jammy Northwest strawberries using Oregon Hill Jams pucker up a peanut butter oat milk ice cream studded with a salted oatmeal streusel.

Bourbon & Caramelized Honeycomb

Hunks of pillowy, deeply caramelized, chocolate-dipped honeycomb candy get tipsy in vanilla-y and smooth oat milk ice cream that’s been spiked with Portland’s Eastside Distillery Bourbon. As with most bourbons, their distillation process renders the ice cream gluten-free.

Chocolate Hazelnut Cookies & Cream

This is the most decadent ice cream you’ve ever tasted thanks to the trifecta of single-origin chocolate, coconut cream, and hazelnut butter. Chunks of house-made gluten-free and vegan “Oreos” push this ice cream over the top.

Coconut Rice Pudding

Jasmine rice gets cooked with coconut milk flecked with aromatic cardamom and cinnamon spices, mixed with a little sugar and coconut cream and churned into ice cream. Pure, simple, and ultra-creamy.

Banana Avocado Sorbet

The absolutely lush, velvety texture of avocados get their rich natural fats amped-up with bananas that are churned in for a subtle sweetness to round it all out.
