Switzerland’s most iconic mountain in the Alps was illuminated with messages of hope and unity during the global lockdown.

The Matterhorn, which sits on the border of Switzerland and Italy, had inspirational messages projected onto its peak, including things like #hope and #stayhome, to encourage the people of Switzerland to remain positive in this time of crisis.

Images were shared from the official Instagram account of the Zermatt Matterhorn to further share these communications to the world.

Other images projected onto the rocky surface included the Swiss and Italian flags — on separate occasions — illustrating Switzerland’s continued support for Italy, which has seen some of the highest numbers of known confirmed cases and deaths related to coronavirus.

Because of its shared border, Switzerland has been working diligently to contain the spread of coronavirus.

The country declared a state of emergency on March 16 due to the increasing number of confirmed cases.

Other countries across the world have also used their monuments to enact messages of resilience during the coronavirus pandemic, including Brazil’s Christ the Redeemer statue, which was illuminated with the various flags of international countries impacted by coronavirus.

According to Johns Hopkins University, as of March 31, Switzerland has 16,186 known confirmed cases of coronavirus with 395 total deaths.
