Portlandians are spoilt when it comes to the diverse selection of deliciously deep-fried delicacies known as doughnuts. From world-renowned shops to food trucks and pop-ups, there’s no shortage of drool-worthy doughnuts in PDX.
However, with Mardi Gras around the corner, and the traditional New Orleans celebration reaching all across the globe, did you know that you can get one of The Big Easy’s most beloved treats in Portland?
Folks flock from all over the globe to try an authentic beignet straight from the powdered sugar bowls of just a few New Orleans classics. Most notably Cafe Du Monde, on the outskirts of the French Quarter.

Having eaten a fair share of beignets myself, it would be easy to consider Portlandians lucky to be among the few blessed with a bakery that makes one of the best and most authentic beignets outside of the state of Louisiana.
Nola Doughnuts, located on NW 10th Avenue (just around the corner from Powell’s City of Books), is respectfully the closest thing to a Cafe Du Monde beignet you could ever find.
Created by New Orleans transplants, and siblings, Robert Herkes and Connie Demerell, Nola Doughnuts is the product of extremely hard work and dedication to those same classic New Orleans bakery treats they grew up with.

“New Orleans is a city deeply rooted in food, family, and community, and these traditions are core values at NOLA Doughnuts,” reads the bakery’s story, and it comes across so well when you step inside. Immediately, you are hit in the face with some of the freshest doughnut scents, as well as the classic Big Easy friendliness oozing from the staff there.
The Pearl District bakery also offers up Nola-inspired La’ssants and King Cake.
If you’re looking to spruce up your Mardi Gras celebration here in Portland, we can’t recommend a mouth-watering beignet from Nola Doughnut enough.
