5 places to get the best breakfast in Portland

Feb 11 2020, 11:24 pm

It’s often considered “the most important meal of the day” and is a blessing regardless of the time of consumption. Breakfast can be the perfect way to kick off a busy day, or the flawless cap at the end of a long one, and everything in between. It’s more of a way of life than a timeframe-specific meal, and Portland is home to some of the best places to enjoy it.

In the spirit of Byways Cafe (RIP), here are five breakfast spots in Portland we think you’ll like a waffle lot.

The Hazel Room

Out of all the fantastic places to get some morning-inspired eats within the city limits of Portland, it’s arguable that no spot does the “daily special” better than The Hazel Room. This East Portland sanctuary serves up some of the most unique and scrumptious breakfast foods. Recent specials include Latkes with capers, applesauce, and sour cream; Huevos Rancheros; and that delicious-looking Acorn Squash Benny (above).

Stepping Stone Cafe

For those looking to take part in something a little bit more surreal, Stepping Stone Cafe in Northwest District has one of the craziest pancakes on earth (it was even featured on Man v. Food on Food Network). Aside from gigantic fried bread circles, Stepping Stone also plays home to the Badass Omelet, which is a must for those looking for a heavy treat.

The Roxy Diner

We all know that the weirder side of Portland can often be the best side, which is precisely why The Roxy Diner — just off Burnside — flaunts the odd and the neon. A true Portland classic, with dreamy breakfast eats like the Steve Buscemi Breakfast (corned beef hash), and Miss Piggy’s Landing Strip (“four slices of bacon, cooked right the f*** into the pancake”), The Roxy Diner is as much an atmosphere as it is a fantastic place to find breakfast at all times of the day.

Cheryl’s on 12th

Part breakfast eatery, part catering company, Cheryl’s on 12th is Downtown Portland’s go-to for classed-up early menu items. In particular, this 12th Avenue breakfast spot is home to the Apple Fritter Breakfast Sandwich, which belongs in the breakfast hall-of-fame.

Bad Habit Room

It’s a good meal, but one Portland establishment aims to provide you with a new — and rather delicious — bad habit. The Bad Habit Room in the Humboldt District takes breakfast foods up a notch or two and dresses them down to deliver your new addiction. Menu favorites include homemade pop tarts and baked french toast.
