Commemorate Pride month and the 50th anniversary of the first Pride March at the iconic neighborhood in New York City that sparked a movement, Greenwich Village.

On Tuesday, June 23, users can partake in an immersive virtual tour experience hosted by Jay Shockley and Ken Lustbader of the NYC LGBT Historic Sites Project as they explore the neighborhood that was the “epicentre of LGBT life well into the late 20th century.”

The NYC LGBT Historic Sites Project is an initiative whose goal is to preserve and provide knowledge surrounding the history of the LGBTQ community and place it in a geographical context by highlighting various places of significance. It also aims to raise awareness about the LGBTQ community’s contribution to broader American history as well as “the struggles it has faced in achieving acceptance and equality under the law.”

During the tour, viewers will be transported to various points associated with LGBTQ artists, activists, and businesses. They will learn more about the locations and individuals before and after the Stonewall Riots and subsequent LGBTQ civil rights movement, and how their courage has had a lasting impact on shaping the LGBTQ community.

For those who may not know, the Stonewall Riots were a series of demonstrations and protests conducted by members of the LGBTQ community that began on June 28, 1969, with a confrontation between police and LGBTQ rights activists outside the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in Greenwich Village, New York.

Shockley and Lustbader have been advocates for issues surrounding the LGBTQ community as well as its history and historic preservation for more than 25 years.

The virtual tour will take place from 11 am to 12 pm PDT on June 23. For more information, visit the tour’s eventbrite page.
