Uber to provide free rides, meals to victims of domestic violence during pandemic

Ride-hailing company Uber announced today it will be partnering with various Canadian organizations to provide free rides, meals, and food delivery to victims of domestic violence during the pandemic.

In a statement, Uber says COVID-19 stay-at-home orders have resulted in “unintended challenges” for some of the most vulnerable Canadians, including victims of sexual, domestic, or gender-based violence.

Experts have also reported a spike in domestic violence across the globe over the last few weeks in Canada and across the globe.

The company has pledged 50,000 free rides and extra support to shelters and safe spaces in over 35 cities across 17 countries.

Here in Canada, Uber has also partnered with YWCA Canada, Le Chaînon, and Ending Violence Association in BC to offer free rides and meals to support workers.

“We’re extremely grateful for their tireless efforts to support our communities during this especially difficult time,” said Uber in a statement.

Earlier this week Uber also announced it would be offering free rides to healthcare workers across Canada as part of the company’s new push to contribute to COVID-19 efforts.

The ride-hailing giant says it will provide over $6 million in free ride credits, meals, and food deliveries to Canadian frontline healthcare workers, as well as those who work in grocery and pharmacy stores, frontline non-profit organizations such as food banks, seniors, and others in need.
