Nearly 9,000 Montreal teachers set to strike illegally on May 1

Nearly 9,000 teachers who are members of the Alliance des professeurs de Montreal are planning to go on a one-day strike on May 1, reports CBC.

The teachers voted 77% in favour of walking off the job on May 1, which is also International Workers’ Day.

The strike is illegal under the Quebec Labour code however, union president Catherine Renaud said the Alliance des professeurs is set to go to court over the issue, if necessary.

Quebec’s contract for primary and secondary teachers expires on March 31, 2020. It’s a rule that teachers cannot strike if their contract is still in effect.

If the teachers do follow through with the strike, they could face fines under the provisions of the Quebec Labour Code.

Teachers say they are struggling to come to an agreement over issues like work-life balance and the lack of substitute teachers.
