Quebec’s taxi industry will be getting some major financial support from the provincial government.

The Government of Quebec announced today that it will provide $44 million over the next five years to help modernize the taxi industry.

The $44 million will go towards implementing a modern support program for cabs as they continue to compete with ride-sharing app Uber. The funding will also help create a working group that will address taxi license holders and compensation.

“The implementation of these measures demonstrates that we are listening to the needs of the taxi industry, which is currently undergoing modernization. Moreover, we will continue to work together to offer users a modern industry that meets their needs,” said Minister of Transport André Fortin, in a statement.

“Today, we reiterate our commitment to this industry to provide the necessary support to continue its modernization and position itself in the new 21st century Quebec.”
