Two Montreal institutions have ranked in the 2021 Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

McGill University and Université de Montreal have taken the 40th and 73rd respective spots on the worldwide list while both ranking in Canada’s top 5.

Within the Canadian top 5, McGill finished third behind the University of Toronto (18th overall) and the University of British Columbia (34th). Hamilton’s McMaster University (69th) wedged its way in fourth place, just ahead of U de M.

The report lists over 1,500 universities in the world and claims to be the “only global university performance table to judge research-intensive universities across all of their core missions: teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook.”

Universities were ranked on 13 criteria, including teaching, research, citations, industry income, and international outlooks.

England’s University of Oxford placed first on the list for the fifth year in a row, while the US is home to eight of the top 10 universities in 2021.
