The City of Montreal renews its state of emergency

In accordance with the Civil Protection Act, Montreal’s executive committee has renewed its state of emergency for at “least five more days” for the Montreal metropolitan area.

The state of emergency, which was originally declared on March 27, grants “exceptional powers to the agglomeration,” enabling it to respond to the current pandemic across its territory.

Specifically, it gives Montreal executives the opportunity to take swift actions to deal with the ongoing pandemic.

According to the city’s press release, Montreal continues to collaborate closely with its team of experts from its emergency response coordination centre, the regional public health department, and the healthcare network to fight the spread of COVID-19.

During a meeting held on Wednesday, December 3, the urban agglomeration council adopted a by-law amendment under the Civil Protection Act, enabling the committee to renew the state of emergency for the entire agglomeration for five days at a time, through December 7, at least.

Montreal can now extend its state of emergency without requiring an urban committee meeting every time.
