Detroit-style deep-dish pizza pop-up opens in Montreal

Detroit-style pizza, welcome to Montreal.

A deep-dish pizza pop-up has sliced its way into a portion of Café Pigeon in Monkland, offering specialized pizza from Motown, for a limited time.

The pies, named Fungool Pizza, come with six thick slices and deep-dish pizza’s trademark hefty doses of crust.

Fungool Pizzas result in flavourful pies with a thick outside crust and a crunch exterior. And then cheese. So much cheese.

The pop-up offers nine options to choose from: pepperoni (obviously), margherita, spinach & sausage, mushroom, tomato & ricotta, The Reuben (with Montreal smoke meat), just cheese, vegetarian, and the steak & pepperoni sub pizza.

“What is Detroit Style Pizza and why haven’t you heard of it before?” reads the Fungool Pizza website. “A close cousin to the Sicilian pizza, Detroit Style has cheese that goes edge to edge. The dough is airy and light. The crust is cheesy and crispy. And the sauce… it goes ON TOP.”

Each pizza ranges between $18 and $25 and can feed two people (unless you’re really hungry.) Fungool offers dipping sauces on the side in case you really want to get wild.

Fungool gives directions on how to prep the pizza once you get home:

  • Preheat oven or toaster oven to 450°F.
  • Place pizza on baking sheet lined with tin foil (if you have a wire rack to place on the baking sheet, please use it).
  • Once oven is ripping hot, put the sheet with the pizza in the oven for 8-10 minutes.
  • Once the cheese is bubbly, take out of the oven and eat.

Have a tasty one, Montreal. It’s been a slice. Or a dish.
