Ah, the Montreal depanneur. New York City has bodegas, everywhere else has convenience stores, and we have depanneurs.

Think of the number of different depanneurs you’ve been through in your life. Packs of gum, bags of chips, a last resort dep sandwich– you’re probably nearing the tens of thousands.

Lucie Bazzo, a Montreal-based photographer and lighting designer, has been sharing a series of photos featuring different depanneurs from across Montreal on her social channels.

Bazzo says her depanneur series started during the pandemic, “light was emitting from the convenience store like a lighthouse in the night. So I started to take pictures of them. It’s a kind of social study with a theatre point of view.”

She tells Daily Hive, “each convenience store is like a small stage and we can imagine a story with the lights and people who enter in the store! And depanneur — it’s so Montreal!” Her series includes depanneurs from Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie, Little Italy, Verdun, The Plateau, and Hochelaga-Maisonneuve.

Bazzo says the series is a “never-ending story” and that all of her photos are taken with her iPhone. She says it’s street photography and she captures most of the deps by bike. “I discover the city and when something catches my eyes, I take a picture.”

Check out the series below and see how many of these local spots you’ve stopped in at.
