The event is named after o-hanami, a Japanese tradition of holding flower-viewing parties when the cherry blossom trees are in bloom.
For the purposes of this springtime event, Montrealers are adopting this custom and joining the Botanical Garden in a peaceful afternoon picnic beneath the blooming flowers.
According to Espace pour la vie, Japanese cherry trees do not flower easily in Montreal’s climate. But the Botanical Garden is full of crabapple trees that will be in full bloom come May 19.
Be sure you sign up soon as space is limited and only individuals who have reserved a boxed lunch may take part in the picnic.
Don’t forget to bring a blanket (no lawn chairs allowed as they can cause damage to the grass). Registration is open until May 13.
