Mother Nature is ending February’s first full work-week in Montreal with a Winter Storm Warning.

Environment Canada issued the alert in the early hours of Thursday morning, calling for “significant” amounts of snow.

According to the weather agency, a first snowfall will dump 5 to 10 cm before weakening this afternoon. The snow is expected to develop again tonight and will be “very heavy” until late Friday when 30 to 50 cm can be expected.

“Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve,” reads the alert. “Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow.”

The alert is in effect for the following areas:

  • Châteauguay – La Prairie area
  • Laval area
  • Longueuil – Varennes area
  • Montreal Island area
