The 26-year-old has been placed on long-term injured reserve by the Canadiens, who added in their announcement, “We ask everyone to respect his privacy.”
Placing Drouin on LTIR means that he will be forced to miss the rest of this season at least.
Drouin has played in 44 games this season, scoring two goals and adding 21 assists.
The former third overall pick in 2013 has missed Montreal’s last three games dealing with a “non-COVID illness.”
