BC photographer snaps Canadian Geographic's winning photo
A BC photographer has claimed the top prize for the Canadian Geographic magazine’s photography competition.
Sara Kempner, from Cumberland, BC, submitted a stunning self-portrait titled Seal Bay Play. The photo pays homage to the beach she grew up on located on Vancouver Island.
Photographers were asked to submit a photo capturing what home means to them.
“Growing up in the ’80s and ’90s we didn’t have the internet or even TV a lot of the time, so we spent a lot of time outside. Luckily, the beach was my front yard. As kids, we used to play a game to see how far we could make it down the beach without touching the ground by hopping from log to log,” Kempner told Daily Hive.
“I thought it would be neat to create an image that pays tribute to the place that heavily influenced my overall lifestyle from an early age.”
A self-taught photographer, Kempner officially launched her business in 2018 with nature and landscape photography as her favourite genres to shoot.
“I can spend hours in one place trying to create the perfect image. And even though I’m not a morning person, I love to be up early and catch the sunrise. It’s usually so quiet and peaceful, and I can be totally alone in places that are busy during the day.”

With the COVID-19 pandemic, Kempner has been able to spend a lot more time on her photography business despite not being behind the camera as often.
She explains that she’s found other ways to inspire herself like teaching photography online, starting social media challenges to stay engaged with her followers, and shooting front-porch family portrait sessions of folks from a safe distance.
“It was a really neat way to get out and engage with my community again in a safe manner”, explains Kempner.
“The pandemic kind of forced me to go into photography full time, to make the leap into the freelance world. So, I’m very thankful for that opportunity.”
