United Airlines implements a book-now-pay-later policy for its flights

Nov 18 2019, 10:32 pm

United Airlines has become the latest to add a payment plan service that allows travellers to book now and pay later.

The service is offered through a company called Uplift and lets users make monthly payment contributions to cover the cost of airfare over the course of anywhere from three to up to 11 months before their departure.

United Vacations allows travellers to reserve their vacation from $200 per person and pay the rest later.

The plan is meant to provide customers with the flexibility of being able to make multiple payments over time — which no doubt will come as a relief for many travellers — or even pay with multiple credit cards.

“Our mission to make travel more accessible, affordable and rewarding for everyone perfectly aligns with United’s purpose of connecting people and uniting the world,” said CEO Brian Barth in a press release. “Travel has become a fundamental part of our lives and consumers today demand more flexibility. We’re excited to help more people experience the world with this partnership with United.”

Final payments are required at least 45 days before departure, in which case your credit card will be automatically charged.

The sum of the deposit includes a portion of flight costs, accommodation, and the full cost of any additional holiday add-ons, including excursions, show tickets, or travel protection.

If you are planning a vacation six weeks in advance or more, the deposit option will show up during the booking process in step three of checkout. At this stage, you even have the option of scheduling automatic final payments or organizing email reminders.

“Uplift Pay Monthly seamlessly integrates into United.com’s existing payment processes,” reads the press release. “United customers will see Uplift’s flexible monthly payment option and can quickly apply online and receive an instant decision, right on United.com. Uplift’s deep understanding of travel and its purpose-built, AI-driven platform provide consumers the highest approval rates in travel and a seamless experience backed by customer support available around the clock. ”

The amount of the deposit varies and is based on the specific destination and accommodations for each trip.

“We began offering Uplift Pay Monthly in 2017 with United Vacations and received great feedback from our customers about the option to pay over time,” said Praveen Sharma, VP of Digital Products and Analytics at United, in the press release. “Expanding Uplift’s flexible purchase option to flight tickets now allows even more customers to travel the world and create memories that will last a lifetime.”
