The streets of Buñol in Spain were covered in red earlier this week as 20,000 people participated in the La Tomatina festival.

Known as the “World’s Biggest Food Fight,” La Tomatina involves revellers throwing nearly 100 metric tons of over-ripe tomatoes in the streets.

This year’s festival took place on August 28, and it was one giant tomato-filled party.

According to La Tomatina Tours, the event started in Buñol in either 1944 or 1945, and it’s not completely known why it began.

“Possible theories on how the Tomatina began include a local food fight among friends, a juvenile class war, a volley of tomatoes from bystanders at a carnival parade, a practical joke on a bad musician, and the anarchic aftermath of an accidental lorry spillage,” says the website.

The celebration was banned during the early 1950s under General Francisco Franco for “having no religious significance,” but was brought back for everyone to enjoy in the 1970s.
