When the headlines are filled with grim news, it’s always good to remind ourselves that acts of kindness still happen every day, and here in Edmonton, we’re sure lucky to have neighbours who look out for one another.
Earlier this week, one Edmontonian brightened their neighbours’ day with a note in their apartment building, offering support to anyone who may struggle with a prolonged elevator outage.
“As we all know, the elevator is down, potentially for a few weeks,” the note reads. “This could present difficulties getting up and down the stairs for some of our fellow tenants, especially any who live on the upper floors. If you know anyone who needs help in the next couple of weeks, let me know (getting groceries and other supplies, taking out garbage, etc).”
Signed only as “Justin,” the note was posted to Reddit, where it received thousands of upvotes and sparked dozens of appreciative comments.

“I think that since we’re so exposed to negative garbage, we forget that there’s way more of this that happens than we think. Neighbourhoods are where it’s at,” one user wrote.
Another chimed in, “Justin, the everyday hero we all need. Thanks for being awesome.”
“I don’t care if he’s not on the ballot, Justin for mayor!” added another.
One commenter, who suggested Justin deserved a reward, wrote, “Even beyond the material, I do hope he receives gratitude for his actions, and that people can take this and put that energy into the world wherever they can.”
Another commented, “This is community! We all need to remember this and try to spread it around. Let’s all be like Justin.”
With the weather turning as we head into fall, it’s a good reminder to check in on our own neighbours.
