A mother-daughter duo from Saskatoon is bringing their growing jewellery brand to Edmonton this November, opening a new location at West Edmonton Mall.

The mid-November opening will mark Santorini Design’s first Alberta store, and owners Hanna Erci and Khadijah Ahmed couldn’t be more excited.

The pair launched the brand in 2015 and opened their first store in 2018, starting in warehousing before moving into retail. Like many small businesses, they faced major challenges during the pandemic, but credit their community connection for helping them grow.

Erci joined the business when she was just 16, running the website, social media, and marketing, while her mom brought decades of retail experience to the table. Together, they have built a large and loyal following in Saskatoon.

Most of Santorini’s pieces are designed in-house, with manufacturing in China, Italy, Turkey, and Greece — a nod to the brand’s Mediterranean name. Its Saskatoon shop has become a local favourite, known for its timeless jewellery designs and welcoming, community-focused atmosphere.

After years of steady growth, the pair decided it was time to branch out. Choosing where to open next wasn’t easy, but Edmonton quickly stood out.

ā€œI had visited Edmonton a lot as a kid,ā€ Erci said. ā€œI think it’s an integral part of lots of Saskatchewan kids’ childhoods. Any long weekend or sports tournament, you go to Edmonton, and it’s a big deal because you get to go to the mall.ā€

Erci, a recent university grad, said her friends and professors encouraged her to consider how close Edmonton is to their customer base and how well-known the mall is across Canada. With heavy foot traffic, a welcoming culture, and an expanding retail scene, the pair said they felt Edmonton was the right move.

ā€œPeople have been so enthusiastic,ā€ Ahmed said. ā€œThey’re excited to be part of a small Canadian brand that’s growing.ā€

While they’re already looking ahead, the duo plans to take things slow by building roots in Edmonton before expanding further.

ā€œWe’ve become friends with a lot of our customers,ā€ Erci said. ā€œThat’s something we never want to lose, no matter how big we get.ā€

Ahmed has more than 25 years of retail experience, while Erci offers a digital-first approach. They describe themselves as best friends who often share the same thought process and move at the same pace.

ā€œIt’s kind of creepy sometimes,ā€ Erci laughed. ā€œWe’ll argue for two seconds, and then we’re like, ā€˜Okay, want to grab something to eat?ā€™ā€

Santorini Design is expected to open at West Edmonton Mall in mid-November 2025.
