Zellers is officially back in Canada, with its first new store in more than a decade opening Thursday morning at Londonderry Mall in Edmonton.
We checked it out right as the doors opened at 10 a.m. and found a small crowd gathered outside the entrance. Zellers opened, and we were greeted by balloons framing the entrance, cheerful staff in bright red Zellers T-shirts, and Zeddy, the iconic Zellers teddy bear mascot, posing for photos.

Inside, the store felt bright and well-stocked. Unfortunately for those hoping for sandwiches and hot gravy, thereās no restaurant in here, but the grand opening sale offered some decent discounts. Currently, the store carries brands including Canada Weather Gear, Spyder, Reebok, and a mix of other labels.

The home section takes up about a quarter of the store with some nice-looking decor pieces, including vases, rugs, accents, and picture frames. Even with all home goods 50 per cent off as part of the grand opening sale, some felt slightly pricey.

Clothing covers the rest of the store, which takes up the first floor of the former Hudson’s Bay location, with options for men, women, and kids, including casual wear, workwear, pyjamas, and athletic gear. Everything felt comfy, well-built, and with fabrics that felt right for the price point.

There were a handful of toys, some freeze-dried fruit snacks, and small household items in the long checkout line.

The company calls this new approach “Zellers 3.0”: a smaller, modern department store concept designed to be easy to shop while keeping the affordability and family-friendly focus the brand is known for.
“Now is the right time to bring Zellers back in a way that feels fresh, familiar, and distinctly Canadian,” said Joey Benitah, chief operating officer of Zellers.
This is the first Zellers store to open in Canada since the company closed its doors in 2013. That same year, U.S. retail giant Target entered the Canadian market, positioned by some as an alternative to Zellers, but it ultimately closed nationwide just two years later.

Fans got a taste of Zellersā return in the summer of 2023, when pop-up locations appeared across the country.
The company says transforming the former Londonderry Hudsonās Bay store, which closed in June 2025, into the new Zellers location took less than two months.
Zellers says by Spring 2026, it will begin announcing new locations across the country, with expansion plans over the next several years.
āCanadians have told us they want a more intimate, easy-to-shop experience that still delivers value and accessibility,ā Benitah said. āWeāre starting with a selection we know people will be excited about, and weāll continue expanding from there.ā
