The Edmonton Oilers have become a destination for NHL players in recent years.
Two straight trips to the Stanley Cup Final will do that for a club, not to mention that they also carry an opportunity to play with Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. The fact of the matter is that the Alberta capital is now an attractive place for NHL players, and it’s being seen in how the team is recruiting talent lately.
Edmonton does not have a ton of cap space to add to the team at the moment. Things are tight when it comes to space, but are slated to open up next summer when the cap is expected to soar above $100 million.
So, to add more pieces right now, they need players to take discounts on contracts, and that is exactly what happened with Jack Roslovic. The 28-year-old was the best remaining free agent to open up the season, but he signed a modest one-year deal with the Oilers that carries just a $1.5-million cap hit.
TSN’s Pierre LeBrun reported on Wednesday’s edition of OilersNow that the Ohio native had better offers on the table from other teams, but took less money to come to Edmonton.
“I know for a fact that Roslovic had a better financial offer, even last week, that he turned down in exchange for the cheaper one in Edmonton,” LeBrun said.
There had been multiple reports that the Oilers had offered Roslovic a more expensive contract at the start of free agency, which was ultimately rejected. Edmonton then quickly shifted focus to Andrew Mangiapane and got that one done.
It’s a bit surprising that the Oilers were able to nab both Mangiapane and Roslovic for a combined cap hit of $5.1 million. Though when you look at where Roslovic is slated to play in the Edmonton lineup on Thursday night, it makes sense why he chose the Oilers.
Roslovic laid out his reasons for signing in Edmonton last week.
“An opportunity to win, an opportunity to play with great players,” Roslovic told reporters. “I want to win, I know how hard it is, so it’s a great opportunity [in Edmonton].”

Despite not participating in a training camp this season, the Oilers seem confident that Roslovic can be an impact player. He will lineup on the second line alongside Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Leon Draisaitl in just his second game of the season.
There most likely wasn’t as good an opportunity for him as what he is going to get in Edmonton. If he can take advantage of it, he will be in for a much larger payday next summer.
