A massive recreation and civic centre is preparing to open its doors next month, bringing a host of new amenities to a rapidly growing community near Edmonton.

The City of Spruce Grove has announced that the grand opening of Heavy Metal Place, located at 50 Westwind Dr., will be held on May 10. The enormous complex will house a new branch of the Spruce Grove Public Library, the Spruce Grove Allied Arts Council and art gallery space, and a black box theatre.

Also under the same roof is a community arena and spectator arena, and it will become the home of the Spruce Grove Saints hockey club starting next season.

Additionally, there will be a dedicated program room and walking track. Getting to and from the rec centre will be easy, as it’s already home to the co-located Spruce Grove Transit Centre.

Ground broke on Heavy Metal Place in November 2022 and is the single largest project the City of Spruce Grove has ever completed, according to the City’s website.

“This project has been made possible through the support of several partners, including the Government of Alberta’s Municipal Sustainability Initiative, a funding contribution from Parkland County, and other collaborators and groups.”

To celebrate its grand opening, an official ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place May 10 at 2 p.m., followed by free public skating, facility tours, live entertainment, cake, and Pop-Up Playground games.

The nearby Town of Stony Plain began major construction on a Community Recreation Facility last month and expects it to open in late 2026. Its new space will include community spaces, a walking and running track, a turf field, two multi-purpose sports courts, pickleball courts, a six-sheet curling facility, and a concession.
