Edmonton Oilers sign defenceman Ryan Shea to $20-million contract

The Edmonton Oilers have entered the free agent market.

After making a pair of trades to offload Darnell Nurse and bring in goaltender Devon Levi, GM Stan Bowman put his newfound cap space to good use. The Oilers announced that they had signed defenceman Ryan Shea to a five-year deal with a cap hit of $4 million.

The left-shot defender arrives in the Alberta capital as an obvious third-pairing replacement after Nurse’s departure.

Shea is coming off a breakout season with the Pittsburgh Penguins, having posted six goals and 35 points in 80 games this past year. Before that, he was jumping between the NHL and AHL, having posted a total of six points in 70 games across the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons.

It’s a bit of a risky move from the Oilers, who are betting long-term that this was not a one-off season for Shea. He will join the left side of Edmonton’s defensive group and will likely occupy a third-pairing spot long held by ex-Oiler defender Brett Kulak.

Both Jake Walman and Mattias Ekholm are expected to start the season ahead of Shea on the depth chart. The real question is whether or not his playstyle will help shore up Edmonton’s biggest defensive weaknesses.

His underlying statistics paint him as a more offensive, puck-moving defenceman rather than a defensive stalwart. According to HockeyStats.com, he brings a decent amount of offence, but lacks in his defensive prowess.

It did reveal that he has some good results on the penalty-kill, however, which may give him some more utility for head coach Mike Babcock.

Adding Shea and Mukhamadullin to the lineup should wrap a bow on Edmonton’s defensive group heading into next season. There is, however, some question about where these additions will leave Spencer Stastney, who is still an RFA and is looking for a contract extension.

The summer has just started for Bowman and the Oilers, and we’ll see what’s next for this team over the next little while.
