Ex-Edmonton Oilers goalie Stuart Skinner signs with another Canadian team

Edmonton Oilers fans will be seeing Stuart Skinner a lot more next season.

After getting traded from the Oilers to the Pittsburgh Penguins last season, Skinner is headed back to Canada after inking a new contract in free agency. The 27-year-old has signed a two-year contract with the Winnipeg Jets that carries a $3.75 million cap hit.

This will be the third team that the Edmonton native has played for in under a year.

Skinner is coming off an up-and-down season split between the Oilers and Penguins. He got off to a brutal start in the Alberta capital, prompting GM Stan Bowman to cut ties with the home-grown goaltender, swapping him out in a trade for Tristan Jarry.

He then posted decent numbers with the Penguins, but struggled down the stretch into the playoffs. Overall, Skinner ended the season with a 23-17-9 record, .888 save percentage, and a decent +8.3 goals-saved above-expected (GSAx).

It remains to be seen what kind of role Skinner will play in Winnipeg. Speculation has run wild that the Jets could be nearing a Connor Hellebuyck trade, which would make Skinner the de facto starter in Winnipeg.

If Hellebuyck stays, the former Oilers goalie will likely settle into a backup role.

In a relatively weak free agent class, Skinner actually had some of the best stats of all the available goaltenders. If he hadn’t just been traded away from Edmonton this past season, he probably would have been a decent option for an Oilers club still looking for an answer between the pipes.

After this contract with the Jets, it’s safe to say that the Skinner ship has officially sailed for the Oilers.
