Edmonton Oilers release details for Draisaitl 1,000th point celebration

Edmonton Oilers fans will soon get a chance to congratulate Leon Draisaitl on getting his 1,000th NHL point.

The German superstar notched the historic point back on Dec. 16 with an assist on a Zach Hyman goal in a 6-3 victory against the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Oilers’ bench cleared to celebrate the accomplishments, and hilarious custom-made T-shirts were made to commemorate the moment.

Draisaitl became just the fifth player in Oilers history to hit the 1,000-point milestone, joining the ranks of legends like Wayne Gretzky, Jari Kurri, and Mark Messier, as well as teammate Connor McDavid.

Overall, he became the 103rd player in NHL history to reach the plateau.

Yet, it’s been nearly a month since the big point, and Edmonton fans still haven’t had a chance to celebrate the moment on home ice. That is set to change this week, as the organization is planning a special pre-game ceremony to honour Draisaitl’s achievement.

“The Edmonton Oilers and NHL will honour Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl for scoring 1,000 career points in advance of the team’s matchup against the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday, January 10 at Rogers Place,” the Oilers said in a press release.

“Joined by his family, Draisaitl will be presented with a Golden Stick and commemorative Tiffany Crystal for his accomplishment, and fellow Edmonton Oilers players will present their alternate captain with a gift from his teammates. The ceremony will also include a special video tribute to mark Draisaitl’s accomplishment.”

This is a ceremony that Oilers fans should have fresh in their mind after McDavid did the same last season.

His wife, Celeste Draisaitl, is expected to be involved in the ceremony, as are Oilers GM Stan Bowman and CEO Jeff Jackson. The statement also revealed that Draisaitl’s teammates will play a role in the celebration as well.

McDavid had his beloved dog, Lenard, participate in his ceremony. It remains to be seen if Draisaitl will have his dog, Bowie, on the ice for the ceremony.
