Leon Draisaitl is the latest member of the NHL’s 1,000-point club, and his Edmonton Oilers teammates pulled out all the stops to celebrate.
The German superstar recorded the milestone with an assist on a Zach Hyman power-play marker in a 6-4 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday night. The Oilers bench cleared to celebrate the accomplishment, and Draisaitl followed it up by recording his 1,001 point on the very next shift, assisting on a Connor McDavid goal.
Fittingly, both came against former Oilers goalie Stuart Skinner, who was making his debut with the Penguins.
“Super grateful, super thankful, and, of course, a little bit proud,” Draisaitl said after the game. “Growing up in Germany, it feels like a long way. I’m extremely proud of that.”

Last season, it was McDavid who hit the 1,000-point plateau, and his teammates celebrated with some hilarious custom-made T-shirts as well as a big cake. The cake may have to wait until the Oilers return to Edmonton, but they kept the T-shirt tradition alive with Draisaitl.
This time around, the shirts included an infamous photo of Draisaitl smoking a cigarette during his wedding celebration last summer. Around the photo was the caption “Smoking his way to 1,000 NHL points” with the smoke from the cigarette forming the Oilers logo.
Of course, the backdrop to the scene was the flag of his native Germany. He revealed that the mastermind behind the design was Brad Harrison, the Oilers’ assistant equipment manager.
“There’s a lot of details on [the shirt] that I love,” Draisaitl said with a smile. “Hairball is about as good as it gets with this stuff… pretty savvy.”

His Oilers teammates seemed to be having even more fun and brought some props to go along with the shirts. Backup goalie Calvin Pickard was caught by the Oilers’ social team with what looks like a prop cigarette in his mouth, posing with Leon’s linemate Vasily Podkolzin.
It looked like the room was having an absolute blast.
There will certainly be an on-ice ceremony back at Rogers Place to commemorate Draisaitl’s accomplishment. While the dressing room was having a ton of fun with it, fans should expect a little more of a serious tone when the organization congratulates him.
