A prominent Edmonton Oilers prospect is leaving the organization after signing a new contract overseas.

Finnish forward Roby Jarventie is leaving the team after inking a two-year deal with AmbrƬ Piotta of the Swiss League. This will mark the 23-year-old’s departure from the Oilers after spending the last two seasons in the organization.

Jarventie was initially acquired from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for former first-round pick Xavier Bourgault in the summer of 2024.

Prospect David Lewandowski is now all that Edmonton has to show from that deal, as they selected him with the 2025 fourth-round pick that came along with Jarventie.

This isn’t the first time that Jarventie’s name has appeared in reports that he has bolted overseas. Just last summer, there was intense speculation that the former second-round pick had left the Oilers to sign with a team in native Finland.

Those reports turned out to be false, as he quickly signed a one-year extension with Edmonton soon after.

Losing Jarventie isn’t a major loss for the organization, but it does hurt a little. He was one of their best AHL players with the Bakersfield Condors last season. He seemed to rebound from an injury-riddled 2024-25 campaign, putting up 23 goals and 47 points in 61 AHL games this year.

He failed to register a point in the three NHL games he played with the Oilers this season.

Heading into September, it was expected that Jarventie would have an outside chance at cracking the Oilers’ NHL roster. There will be fierce competition between some of Bakersfield’s best players, like Ike Howard and Quinn Hutson, to break into the big leagues, but a strong camp could have worked in his favour.

It seems he liked the guaranteed spot in the Swiss league over a slim chance at becoming an NHL regular in Edmonton.
