Oilers prospect bolting to Finland after just one season with Edmonton: report

The Edmonton Oilers’ prospect cupboards will be down a player next season.

After just a single season with the Oilers organization, prospect Roby Jarventie is headed overseas on a three-year contract with Tappara in Finland’s SM-Liiga. The 22-year-old forward appeared in just two AHL games with the Bakersfield Condors this season after dealing with injuries.

Jarventie played just 29 professional games last year between the Ottawa Senators and the AHL’s Belleville Senators. Full Press Hockey’s Murray Pam was the first to report Jarventie’s new contract in Finland.

The Oilers acquired Jarventie from the Senators last summer in a deal that sent 2021 first-rounder Xavier Bourgault to the Canadian capital. The hope was that the Finn could get healthy and eventually help out the Oilers’ depth, as he did have a good scoring track record when healthy.

However, it seems like those injury woes followed him to the Alberta capital, and he did not get much chance to prove himself. Despite only playing two AHL games, he managed to get assists in both of his appearances, putting him on a point-per-game pace.

Jarventie was set to become an RFA this summer, and with him signing a multi-year deal in Finland, it now seems likely that the Oilers will opt not to qualify the ex-second-rounder from 2020.

Edmonton fans shouldn’t feel too bad about the trade, as Bourgault has not exactly blossomed in Ottawa. The Quebecois product did manage to stay healthy, but he didn’t blow anybody away with 12 goals and 26 points through 61 AHL games this past season. It feels unlikely that Bourgault will be making much of an NHL impact any time soon, if at all.

It’s unfortunate to see a prospect with some good potential be derailed by injuries, but with a team like the Oilers already loaded up with depth players, it should be something this team can absorb.
