The Edmonton Oilers’ record book is about to look a little different.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is set to play in his 1,038th NHL game with the Oilers on Tuesday night against the New Jersey Devils. That will vault him past Hall of Famer Kevin Lowe to give him the most games played in Oilers franchise history.
It will break Lowe’s long-standing record, which has stood for 28 years, and will cement RNH as being one of the franchise’s most beloved players. It’s a shame that such a historic game couldn’t be played in Edmonton at Rogers Place, but Nugent-Hopkins’ teammates have found a way to make it a little more special.
As is routine whenever an Oilers player hits a major milestone, custom-made T-shirts were made ahead of Tuesday’s game in New Jersey to celebrate Nuge’s rise to the top of the games-played list.
The shirt depicts RNH with a mullet, smoking a cigarette, wearing a short-sleeve camo shirt, and with a tattoo on his arm. In other words, it’s very Albertan-coded.

The custom T-shirt treatment shouldn’t feel new for RNH, as he was the recipient of something similar last season, when he broke the 1,000-game benchmark. That rendition involved players wearing custom Christmas-like sweaters to celebrate the longest-tenured Oilers player.
They were actually quite fashionable.

Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid also got custom T-shirts over the years for breaking the 1,000-point plateau.
Drafted first-overall in 2011, Nugent-Hopkins has spent more than a decade with the Oilers. Throughout his 1,037 games so far, the 33-year-old has amassed 294 goals, 517 assists, and 811 points. Those totals rank him eighth, sixth, and seventh, respectively, on the franchise leaderboards. If he plays for another five or six years, that could give him an outside shot at surpassing the 1,000-point mark.
Edmonton has a policy that only Hall of Fame players can have their numbers raised to the Rogers Place rafters, but if any player could be an exception, it might be Nugent-Hopkins’ #93.
