Edmonton Oilers reveal jersey numbers for four new players

Edmonton Oilers fans will need to get acquainted with a few new players this upcoming season.

It’s been a busy start to the offseason for GM Stan Bowman. The Oilers have brought in two new goalies in Frederik Andersen and Devon Levi, traded Darnell Nurse for Shakir Mukhamadullin, and inked both defenceman Ryan Shea and depth forward Matheiu Joseph to contracts.

That is a total of five new players acquired over the course of the first week of July, meaning there will be some new jersey numbers coming to the team. Edmonton hasn’t done the usual jersey number reveal post on social media, but they did update their roster on the official team website.

In doing so, they have also revealed the new jersey numbers for four of the five new players acquired.

The only new player not assigned a number is Mukhamadullin, who wore #85 with the San Jose Sharks. That number is available with the Oilers, but it remains to be seen if the Russian defender opts to take it. Tweener defenceman Cam Dineen was the last Edmonton player to take that sweater.

Andersen will be wearing a familiar jersey for Oilers fans, and a traditional goalie number, as the veteran Dane will don the #30 sweater. The 36-year-old goaltender was forced to change from his usual #31 as it’s retired in Edmonton in honour of Grant Fuhr.

Calvin Pickard was the last Oilers goalie to wear #30, but his departure to the Minnesota Wild this summer opened it up for Andersen to take.

Levi will be going for a less traditional goalie number this upcoming season, as he is listed as #27 on the Oilers website. That would make the 24-year-old the first goalie in Oilers history to wear that number and the first player in general since defenceman Brett Kulak.

Moving away from the crease, Ryan Shea is making a slight adjustment as Connor Murphy is wearing his usual #5 sweater for the Oilers. Instead, Shea will move one number up to #6, last worn by defenceman Ben Gleason in 2024.

Joseph will be battling for an Oilers roster spot in September, but he already has a jersey number picked out. He has chosen the #21 sweater, which was last worn by Trent Frederic, who switched to #10 this past season.
