Edmonton road closures coming to protect NHL playoff bubble

The City of Edmonton will enact road closures next week to keep certain areas of the city reserved for NHL players in their (hopefully) coronavirus-free playoff bubble.

“These closures are in place in an effort to balance the impacts of pedestrians and motorists with the safety and security of the NHL bubble,” the City said in a news release.

The first set of closures will be in the Ice District. The west sidewalk and road on 102 Street will be closed between 103 Avenue and 104 Avenue.

Starting Monday, July 26, 101 Street will also be closed from 102A Avenue to 103 Avenue nightly from 9 pm to 5 am. During the day, 101 Street will only have one lane of traffic open in each direction. The east sidewalk will be closed as well.

The City advised drivers and pedestrians to detour using 100 Street or 105 Street.

“We thank the public for their patience as we get ready to welcome NHL officials, personnel and players to Edmonton for the 2020 playoffs,” the release said.
