NHL insider shoots down idea of another Edmonton Oilers goalie trade

It doesn’t sound like Edmonton Oilers fans should expect another goalie trade before Friday’s deadline.

The never-ending controversy between the pipes has continued to haunt the Oilers after the Olympic break. The tandem of Tristan Jarry and Connor Ingram has combined for a 1-2-0 record and an .867 SV% in the three games since returning from the extended break.

Ingram appears to be on track to usurp Jarry as the starting goalie moving forward, despite his results taking a bit of a dive lately as well. Edmonton is now third in the Pacific Division with teams like Seattle Kraken and the LA Kings nipping at their heels.

You’d think that adding a new goaltender at the trade deadline would be of interest to GM Stan Bowman, but that doesn’t appear to be the case. NHL insider Elliotte Friedman shot down the idea that the Oilers would be looking to make a goalie trade on the latest edition of Saturday Headlines.

“I don’t think so, they’ve already made their [goalie] move,” Friedman said after co-host Ron MacLean asked if the Oilers would be trading for a new goalie.

The move that Friedman is referring to is the Stuart Skinner swap for Jarry that the Oilers made with the Pittsburgh Penguins back in December. That was a seismic move for the franchise, and one that carried plenty of risk considering Jarry’s shaky history. The hope was that it would put an end to all the goalie drama in Edmonton, but it’s only gotten louder in the months since.

Fans may also forget that Bowman also traded for Ingram in a deal with the Utah Mammoth shortly before the season. They’ve already completely re-hauled their goaltending tandem from Skinner-Calvin Pickard at the start of the season to Jarry-Ingram now.

Instead of goaltending, Friedman reported that the Oilers’ trade interest will be in a third-line centre and a defenceman who can play the right side.

“I think Edmonton is looking at two possibilities: A defenceman who can play the right side, [Oliver Ekman-Larsson] has done that before, or potentially a third [line] centre, especially if Ryan Nugent-Hopkins stays on the wing,” Friedman said.

“They’ve gotta move on from [Andrew] Mangiapane, but those are, I think, the two positions that Edmonton is considering shoring up.”

Toronto Maple Leafs’ Ekman-Larsson has been brought up multiple times in connection to the Oilers, as has St. Louis Blues’ rearguard Justin Faulk. When it comes to forwards, Leafs’ winger Bobby McMann is another popular name around Edmonton, though he isn’t a centre.

There isn’t much time left before the deadline hits, so fans should be on high-alert for trades to hit in the coming days.
