Edmonton Oilers make surprise trade with Utah to get new goalie

The Edmonton Oilers have finally made a trade for a new goaltender.

On Wednesday morning, it was announced that the Oilers had acquired Connor Ingram from the Utah Mammoth in exchange for future considerations. This comes a couple of days after Ingram cleared waivers and weeks of rumours that Utah was trying to find him a new team.

Utah has retained $800,000 of his $1.95 million cap hit, bringing Ingram down to $1.15 million for the season.

The 28-year-old Saskatchewan native is coming off a few rough years on a personal level. Ingram arrived as an NHL goaltender in the 2023-24 season with the Arizona Coyotes, posting an impressive .908 save percentage in 50 games on a struggling team.

Heading into Utah last season, the expectation was that he would hold down the starter’s job. However, he had to enter the NHL’s Player Assistance program after losing his mother to breast cancer last December. Ingram also has a history of OCD, which landed him in the player assistance program back in 2021 while a member of the Nashville Predators.

Ingram has since left the program and is ready to resume his career. He is currently signed to an expiring contract through this season and could very well crack the Oilers’ opening night lineup as Stuart Skinner’s backup, though he will have to beat out veteran Calvin Pickard for that job.

Since he was sent straight to the AHL, however, it’s more than likely that Ingram will start the new season with the Bakersfield Condors. There is always a chance he earns an early-season call-up.

The Oilers have been coy on acquiring another goalie for quite some time, and this marks the first significant move to the position since the team signed Jack Campbell in the summer of 2022.
