Today was not a good day for coronavirus in Alberta.

New numbers from the Province of Alberta show that new detected cases rose by 171 over the past 24 hours — the largest daily increase the province has seen in all of September.

Barring the 180 case increase Alberta saw on August 29, the last time Alberta saw a daily increase as high as today’s was way back at the end of April.

The jump in new cases resulted in an increase of four for active cases in Alberta, which now sit at 1,495.

Edmonton saw a significant increase in active cases, jumping from 650 to 710 over the past 24 hours. That increase was mitigated by Calgary’s own decrease in active infection, which dropped by 33 in the same span of time.

No new coronavirus-related deaths were reported in the past day, leaving the total number of fatalities during the pandemic at 254.

As always, Albertans are encouraged to practice safe physical distancing, maintain proper hand hygiene, wear a mask when out in public, and stay at home if they are feeling sick.
