'Hell of a run': Edmonton radio host Layne Mitchell leaving Sonic 102.9
A longtime voice in the Edmonton radio world is leaving, with Sonic 102.9 host Layne Mitchell announcing his departure.
Mitchell posted to his social media Sunday evening, stating he will be leaving the station, marking nearly 20 years as a well-known voice on the airwaves in the city.
In the nearly four-minute-long clip, Mitchell goes on to thank listeners while reminiscing on all of the wild things he experienced and important world events he witnessed during his time on air.
“I really hope you continue to listen to Sonic, and I hope the station does just as well without me. I do want to say a huge thank you to Rogers, thank you to all the sponsors, but more than anything, thank you. Thank you for listening. We laughed together. We shared stories,” Mitchell said.
Near the end of the clip, Mitchell goes on to say that he’s not sure what is coming next for him; however, he mentioned that people will still be able to hear his voice in commercials, concert promos and movie trailers across the country.
He added he’s also going to engineer and produce some local bands, and maybe take on some personal training clients.
“Mostly, I’m gonna just follow my bliss while I look for that next mountain to climb. Until then, sincerely, thank you for listening,” he said.
“Three decades of adventure and hijinks that somehow managed to put food on my family’s table, and I have you to thank. Peace and love.”
It’s been a busy week for the media landscape in Edmonton, with Global News Edmonton six o’clock anchor Scott Roberts announcing he was part of the Corus layoffs.
