A familiar face to Edmontonians has been let go as part of a massive restructuring being done by Corus Entertainment.
Global News Edmonton six o’clock anchor Scott Roberts announced on social media Thursday that he was let go as part of the move by Corus, which is the parent company of Global News, in its bid to “centralize aspects of its control room operations” following reports that production of Calgary and Edmonton newscasts would move to Toronto.
“Sad to say but I won’t be reporting the evening news on Global any longer. The company is making significant cuts to local news and I’m among them,” Roberts said in an Instagram post.
“Thank you to everyone who invited me into their homes over the past four years. This truly is an incredible city that immediately made me feel part of the community again. I hope I played some role in keeping you informed and engaged. It’s been a privilege. Thinking of all my colleagues impacted by the layoffs.”
Roberts was picked as the replacement of outgoing veteran anchor Gord Steinke, who retired from the Global Edmonton anchor desk in August 2022.

Unifor confirmed that 43 of its members were cut across the country. An estimated 28 positions are eliminated in Alberta, two in British Columbia, five in Winnipeg, two in Saskatoon, three in the Maritimes, and three in the Ontario region.
“Unifor is condemning the latest round of layoffs at Corus Entertainment,” the union stated. “The dozens of job cuts are the latest sign of a broadcasting sector under mounting pressure from media consolidation, delayed government action, and financial uncertainty.”
It’s been a bumpy past couple of years for Corus. In 2024, the media giant pulled the plug on 880 Edmonton. In September 2025, a round of Corus layoffs hit Global News, with a total of 45 people losing their jobs across B.C. and Alberta. In December 2025, Corus pulled its news traffic helicopters from the sky in Calgary and Edmonton.
