Beloved Edmonton cafe closes its doors amidst rising business costs

Matcha lovers in Edmonton are officially in mourning, as Kommune Snack Bar has closed its doors this past weekend.
This Scandinavian-inspired snack bar opened in the spring of 2025, and after just over a year, it’s at the end of its time as we know it. Today, June 15, 2026, marks the closure of the cafe and bar in its current form.
“We set out to create more than a café, bar, or music venue. We wanted to build a place for kommunity, conversation, music, culture and connection. Along the way we shared countless coffees, meals, records, DJ sets, performances, laughs, ideas and a few tears,” reads the team’s Instagram post.

In the end, the team wasn’t able to sustain the business in the downtown area.
“We tried hard to navigate the construction outside our doors, rising costs and the challenges facing independent businesses. In the end, we couldn’t make the numbers work,” said the team on Instagram.
With the rising construction downtown in Edmonton, it’s not surprising to see businesses step away. Kommune may have had to close, but the issue is definitely larger than just this one cafe.
Other neighbouring businesses have commented on the closure on Instagram, with names like Sip Liquor Market and Spilt Bar offering their condolences as well as support for the future.
Although there is some good news to finish off with. This isn’t the end of this snack bar journey. The doors are closing, but there’s still more to look forward to in the future.
“We’re closing the doors, but we’re not closing the book,” continues the team. “We don’t know exactly what comes next, but we have a feeling this won’t be the last time you hear from Kommune.”
