Emergency repairs prompt new High Level Bridge sidewalk closure
If the High Level Bridge is part of your daily walk or cycle to work, you’ll want to plan ahead this week, as portions of the bridge will be closed for emergency repairs.
Beginning at noon on Monday, July 20, the west sidewalk on the High Level Bridge and the west bridge approach near Ezio Faraone Park will close for emergency repairs to damaged drainage infrastructure and slope erosion caused by recent heavy rainfall.
“The closure is necessary to allow crews to safely access the site, remove the sidewalk and road, clear blocked drainage infrastructure and complete repairs that will help stabilize the slope,” the City explained in a news release.
The closure is expected to remain in place until July 23.

The work comes after repairs to the bridge’s east sidewalk, which reopened on July 17. However, the section between the southeast staircase and Saskatchewan Drive remains closed until further notice. However, the City notes this route is not accessible for people using wheelchairs, scooters or other mobility devices.
“Cyclists using this route will be required to carry their bikes or use the staircase bike rails. People walking, rolling and cycling should plan ahead and use alternate river crossings while this work is underway.”

During the repairs, the City says pedestrians can use the east staircase to access the river valley trail system or cross to the west side using the available stair connections to 109 Street.
Those travelling between downtown and the south side are encouraged to use the Walterdale Bridge or Menzies LRT Bridge as alternate crossings.
