The Toronto Blue Jays are on the verge of elimination.
A heartbreaking Game 5 loss has set up a must-win situation for the Jays as the Seattle Mariners have a chance to advance to the World Series on Sunday night. Luckily, the series will shift back to Toronto for Game 6, meaning the Rogers Centre will be rocking as they cheer on the Blue Jays to keep their season alive.
Nerves are already at an all-time high for the fanbase, but the uncertainty surrounding George Springer’s status is only adding to it.
The 36-year-old Springer had to leave Game 5 in the seventh inning after taking a pitch to the knee. He looked hobbled after the play, and while he tried to remain in the game, he was forced to leave with an injury.
There was some concern he wouldn’t be able to play in this must-win Game 6, but it does appear that Springer will power through the pain. The Blue Jays revealed their starting lineup for the pivotal game, which had Springer in his usual lead-off spot.

Losing Springer for the most important Blue Jays game in over a decade would have been a massive blow to this team. The veteran has not only been an important piece to the offence of this baseball club, but has also proven to be one of Toronto’s emotional leaders.
If he wasn’t able to play, Joey Loperfido would likely take over his spot in the lineup. The 26-year-old was added to the Blue Jays’ ALCS roster shortly before Game 5 after it was revealed that Anthony Santander was suffering from an injury.Ā
Springer has built a reputation for being one of the best postseason players in MLB history, ranking fourth all-time in postseason home runs with 22. Of those long balls, three have come on this year’s playoff run.
Blue Jays fans will be hoping he’ll make it 23 career postseason home runs tonight.
