Toronto Blue Jays manager rips Mariners fans after they cheered Springer's injury

It was an intense moment for two championship-starved franchises.

Game 5 of the ALCS, with the series tied 2-2, and a narrow 2-1 Jays lead in the seventh inning.

That was the moment when Mariners pitcher Bryan Woo accidentally pelted George Springer’s kneecap with an errant pitch.

As Springer dropped to the dirt, some fans appeared to be cheering the fact that he was down on the ground, writhing in pain.

The 36-year-old remained down for a couple of minutes before finally getting up under his own power. As he got up, it appeared as though some Mariners fans booed him, while others were visibly waving goodbye to the injured Blue Jays batter.

The reaction from Mariners fans prompted Blue Jays manager John Schneider to stand up for his injured player postgame.

“I know this is an awesome atmosphere to play in, and it’s really, really cool to play here… I think that the fans who were booing him should take a look in the mirror and understand what kind of player he is.”

“When a guy gets his in the knee, and is in obvious pain, and you have 40,000 people cheering… not the right thing to do.”

Schneider did confirm postgame that the X-rays on Springer came back negative, so there’s a chance he will play in Game 6 back in Toronto.

ā€œGeorge is about as tough as they come, and I think he’ll have to really, really, be hurting to not be in the lineup on Sunday. So, we’ll see how he is.ā€

Following the incident, there were some who tried to rationalize the booing of Springer’s injury.

Springer was named World Series MVP back in 2017 when he helped the Houston Astros win a title. The Astros were reprimanded in 2019 for stealing signs from the opposing team.

While the look on television about fan satisfaction towards Springer’s injury was not great, others tried to dispel the narrative that Seattle fans were happy about the injury.

The Blue Jays host the Mariners in Game 6 at Rogers Centre on Sunday.
