Schneider delivers expletive-filled speech as Toronto Blue Jays face elimination

The Toronto Blue Jays are facing elimination for the first time in these playoffs, but that hasn’t killed John Schneider’s energy.

After the Jays coughed up an eighth-inning lead and lost 6-2 to the Mariners, Schneider had some explaining to do.

Despite the loss, the Jays are heading back home for Game 6 of this series, with the hope of forcing a penultimate Game 7.

Perhaps it’s the home-field advantage, or the fact that the Jays largely played well in Seattle, but Schneider is still sounding optimistic about his team’s chances of continuing their impressive postseason run past Sunday night.

“Pat on the ass,” Schneider said postgame. “Keep your head up, you know what I mean?”

“Everything gets magnified at this time of year. Decisions get magnified, pitches get magnified, s***, I get it, it is what it is.”

That was certainly the case on Friday night, as Brendon Little gave up the game-tying run to Cal Raleigh before walking two batters. Then, Jays pitcher Seranthony DomĂnguez allowed the loss-sealing grand slam to Eugenio SuĂĄrez.

“These guys will bounce back,” Schneider said. “Everyone on our team bounces back, and they’re going to be asked to be in big spots again, and I want them to be ready for it.”

“All we can do is enjoy the flight back to Toronto, enjoy our beds, and our homes, and our families, and we’re going to f***ing get after it on Sunday.”

Blue Jays infielder Ernie Clement echoed Schneider’s optimistic tone postgame as well.

“Right where we want to be,” Clement told Keegan Matheson of MLB.com. “That was our goal coming here, to get back to Toronto.”

“Obviously, we wanted this game to go a little different, but I think we’re in a great spot. I’d say we’re in a great spot. We’ve got a chance, that’s all we need.”

Toronto has proven to be resilient all year, which is showcased in the fact that they lead the MLB with 50 come-from-behind victories this season, including playoffs.

“I don’t want these guys to crawl into a hole,” Schneider said. “That’s not who we are. We’ll get after it on Sunday, we’ll be ready to play. I wouldn’t have it any other way with this group.”

“Our backs are going to be against the wall? Great, we don’t give a s***. I hope those guys don’t give a s***, excuse my language.”

“It’s going to be fun, I hope these guys are ready for it. I know they’ll be ready for it.”
